Contact Lens Exams

An eyeglass prescription is not a substitute for a contact lens prescription. An eyeglass prescription measures for lenses that are positioned in front of the eyes; whereas a contact lens prescription measures for lenses that sit directly on the surface the eye. An improper contact lens fit or incorrect prescription could damage the health of your eyes.

A contact lens exam is a more in-depth examination. In addition to your comprehensive “well” eye exam, a contact lens exam includes specialty testing specific to contact lens wearers. This exam takes additional time and often includes trial lenses and follow-up visits. Contact lens patients are assessed a $25 evaluation fee that is not covered by routine eye exam benefits.

  • If you are requesting contact lenses for the first time, you must have a thorough evaluation to make certain you are a good candidate for wearing contacts. Your doctor will perform several tests to evaluate your eyes for contact lenses; you will also be trained on insertion and removal techniques and lens care instructions. You are sent home with trial lenses and a follow-up visit is scheduled to ensure optimum fit and vision prior to finalizing your contact lens prescription and ordering your contact lens supply. Please note that applicable fitting fees apply. (See explanation of fees on the Contact Lens Policy under the Patient Resources tab).
  • If you are a current contact lens wearer, your doctor will evaluate your vision with contacts. Although your vision may be clear and you feel no discomfort from your lenses, there are potential risk factors with improper fitting of contact lenses that can affect the overall health of your eyes.

So, whether you currently wear contact lenses or are considering them for the first time, be sure to specify that you need a contact lens exam when scheduling your next eye appointment.
